Too many networking conversations become a series of transactions: name, company, title, handshake, move on. It's easy to forget and difficult to build anything from.
Charismatic communicators do something different. They ask questions that invite stories instead of answers. But asking a good question is only half the skill. The other half is listening for the thread. When someone says something that carries energy, curiosity, frustration, pride, or excitement, follow that thread. Don't rush to tell your own story.
Vanessa Van Edwards calls these conversation sparkers. Instead of "what do you do," try "anything interesting happen this week?" or "what are you most excited about right now?" These questions are optimistic and open. They signal genuine curiosity about the person, not just their business card. People feel that difference immediately and they lean in.
